So what does the writer and creator of queerHeart stand for, and what does she not? Read on for some clarifications…
A Fellow Explorer

Let’s get this out of the way. If you’re looking for someone who “has all the answers” on any subject concerning sexuality and faith or is “perfect” (whatever that means), that’s not me. My prayer is that I will never come across having “all the answers” or being “perfect” and that God’s Spirit grants me the wisdom, thoughtfulness and humility to check my biases at the door when I write. I also want to be honest about my own experiences in hopes they’ll encourage you along your own journey.
You’ll find this out quick, but I love to learn, question and explore things. Pretty much anything and everything. I have a mental storage unit of thoughts and musings on topics from masturbation to BDSM and polyamory, and I think I’ll have done my job well if, at the end of my writings, you are left with more curiosity than neatly-wrapped-up answers. I’m an explorer in this, and I hope qH makes you one too.
A Safe Space

I know, ‘safe’ sounds wonderful, but what does that really look like for those of us who feel so unseen and lost in the culture war between mainstream LGTBQIA+ and Christianity? First, the topics discussed here will be approached without shame (which the Church most always imparts when and if it ever talks about LGTBQIA+ matters, sexuality and singleness). Let’s be honest. When it comes to cyberspace, there’s hardly any great pro-LGTBQIA+ voices on sexuality that are Christian as well. I’ve been hard-pressed to find communities, digital and flesh-and-blood, that truly support rainbow voices without pressing them to give up one part of their identity. In most spaces, either you fully embrace your sexual identity and abandon your faith, or you assimilate fully into the Church’s so-called “Biblical only” of heterosexual marriage, or to choose celibacy out of church pressure and deny your different, God-given sexuality altogether. Here at queerHeart, we do the humble, messy, curious and open work of daring to blend love of God and queerness together. And here ‘safe’ means:
- Cultivating and protecting a culture of curiosity and asking thoughtful questions about ourselves, others and the world around us
- Never using shaming, hateful, demeaning, manipulative or stereotyping language about qH topics or to qH members. (Anyone who uses language as mentioned will be revoked of qH member privileges and access to the community)
- Striving to display Christ’s love and mission in our actions, thoughts and choices for the glory of His kingdom and in service to our neighbors (aka, everyone.)
- While also giving grace and forgiveness for our imperfections
- Critical thinking that allows for disagreements or challenging opinions crafted in a constructive manner
We Value:
- Christ as our Savior and Lord
- Thoughtful Bible-study
- A love for the arts (theatre, music, literature, cinema etc)
- A love for continual learning
- Heart-filled courage
- Honesty
- Humor
- Curiosity and good questions (Ted Lasso!!!)
- Strength in vulnerability
- Servant Leadership
- Brother/Sisterhood in community
- Humbleness (embracing our primary identity as children of God, walking with Him and serving others)
- Self-Awareness
- Emotional Intelligence
